Root canal treatment (Endodontics)

Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment) - What is it?

Endodontics, commonly known as root canal treatment, is a rapidly developing field of dentistry that saves teeth once destined for extraction. When tooth decay reaches the pulp (the so-called "nerve"), especially in multi-rooted teeth, extraction was previously often recommended; today, most such teeth can be saved. At Kaya Dent Wrocław, we use precision instruments and microscopic techniques, allowing us to clean even the narrowest canals, effectively disinfect them, and seal them tightly. Thanks to this precision, root canal treatment is successful in the vast majority of cases, restoring tooth function and avoiding extraction.

Most teeth with carious lesions are suitable for endodontic treatment, except when a significant portion of the crown is lost, in which case prosthetic methods may be preferable. Non-carious lesions, such as worn, fractured, or damaged teeth, can also be treated. Teeth with unusual shapes or discoloration caused by genetic diseases or nutritional deficiencies, as well as those with old fillings or recurrent root canal infections, are ideal indications for precise, conservative treatment.

Endodontics Wrocław – Types of treatment

At Kaya Dent Wrocław, we perform root canal treatment on both primary and permanent teeth. For permanent teeth that have not yet completed development—usually up to 9-10 years for front teeth and up to 16 years for molars—we use biological treatment, which involves partial cleaning of the canals and the use of special materials to support the tooth's continued natural development.

For fully mature teeth, the recommended method is vital root canal extraction, performed under local anesthesia. This method is precise, safe, and effective, allowing the tooth to be preserved while simultaneously removing infection. Unlike former methods of devalorization ("tooth poisoning"), which risked leaving infected pulp, at Kaya Dent we use mechanical-chemical root canal treatment—cleaning and widening with instruments while simultaneously rinsing with disinfectants.

At our clinic, we use the latest machine-based endodontic systems, refined over the years to meet even the most demanding root canals. This ensures fast, precise, and comfortable treatment. At Kaya Dent, we combine modern technology with experience to provide effective and long-lasting solutions while preserving natural teeth.

Root canal treatment in Wrocław – The course of the procedure

At Kaya Dent Wrocław, root canal treatment begins with comfort and safety for both the patient and the dentist. Local anesthesia is administered, followed by the placement of a rubber dam, which isolates the tooth, protects the mucosa from disinfectants, and prevents accidental loss of instruments into the oral cavity. After preparing the treatment area, the dentist accesses the canals, locates all openings, and begins precise cleaning and preparation. The procedure is performed in conjunction with a qualified assistant, often using a microscope, ensuring exceptional precision and accuracy.

The next step is filling the canals. Depending on the dentist's decision, a temporary or permanent filling is used, using biocompatible liquid gutta-percha, administered with a special applicator to ensure a tight seal. In the case of a temporary filling, a follow-up visit is necessary for a final filling. This ensures the treated tooth is fully protected and regains its function.

Each stage of the procedure is monitored using X-rays. The first images help assess the number and shape of the canals, while subsequent ones verify proper filling. At Kaya Dent Wrocław, we use digital radiography, providing the highest quality images with minimal radiation—equivalent to a week's dose of natural background radiation, completely safe for your health. We cordially invite you to experience our painless root canal treatments, where precision, comfort, and safety are our priorities. Your visit will be professional, safe, and as pleasant as possible.

Root canal treatment Wrocław – What is worth knowing?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, involves the removal of infected pulp from the pulp chamber and canals of the tooth. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels, nourishes the tooth, supports tissue repair through dentin formation, and serves a sensory function, enabling the detection of pain. When infection occurs due to deep decay or trauma, inflammation develops, disrupting blood flow. Encased in hard tissue, the tooth experiences increased pressure, causing pain and leading to pulp necrosis. In this case, immediate root canal treatment is crucial to prevent the spread of infection to the periodontium and bone—delaying treatment can worsen the prognosis and even require tooth extraction.

At Kaya Dent Wrocław, root canal treatment is completely painless and precise. The procedure begins with local anesthesia and isolation of the tooth using a rubber dam, which protects the treatment area from saliva and bacteria. The dentist then accesses the canals, carefully removes the infected pulp using specialized endodontic files, and rinses the canals with disinfectant fluids to eliminate bacteria. Each step is performed with the utmost precision to ensure the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and prepared for restoration.

The final, equally important step is the tight obturation of the canals, which isolates them from oral bacteria, preventing reinfection. The canals are filled immediately, if possible, and the tooth is restored with a composite material. In cases of significant tissue loss, additional prosthetic treatment, such as a crown, is sometimes necessary to restore the tooth's full function and strength. At Kaya Dent, each patient is thoroughly informed and guided through all stages of treatment, ensuring comfort, safety, and long-term protection of natural teeth.

Endodontic treatment – When is it most often necessary?

A tooth requiring root canal treatment often sends clear signals, although the symptoms can sometimes be subtle. Most often, it's severe, prolonged pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods, or when touching or impacting the tooth. Pain that worsens in the evening or at night, especially when lying down, may also indicate the need for endodontic treatment.

Not every problematic tooth causes pain. Sometimes the only symptom is a chronic periapical lesion, visible on an X-ray, suggesting the tooth may be dead. In these cases, your dentist confirms the diagnosis with a pulp vitality test and imaging. Early diagnosis allows for prompt treatment, prevents infection, pain, or tooth loss, and protects your natural smile.

Is root canal treatment safe?

Root canal treatment at Kaya Dent Wrocław is completely safe. Our specialists perform it daily, combining experience with precision, ensuring both effectiveness and safety.

However, there are patients who may be recommended prophylactic antibiotic therapy before and after the procedure due to a higher risk of complications. This includes those with heart, kidney, or joint disease, or a weakened immune system. During root canal treatment, temporary dental bacteremia can occur, in which bacteria from the infected pulp enter the bloodstream. In healthy individuals, the body copes with this problem without any problems, but in susceptible patients, complications can develop in already diseased organs. In such cases, antibiotics act as a protective measure, and the decision is always made by the dentist, individually for each patient.

At Kaya Dent, every treatment is tailored to the patient, combining safety, comfort and long-term oral health, so you can feel confident and at ease throughout your visit.

Root canal treatment during pregnancy

Many patients wonder whether root canal treatment during pregnancy is safe for both mother and child. The answer is yes! If a pregnant woman has a tooth that requires endodontic treatment, the procedure should not be postponed. Untreated pulpitis can be more harmful to both mother and child than the root canal treatment itself. At Kaya Dent Wrocław, we ensure that every procedure is performed safely and comfortably, protecting the health of both mother and child.

What happens after root canal treatment?

For the first 2-3 days after treatment, it's normal to feel some discomfort or mild pain in the treated tooth. This doesn't mean the procedure was performed incorrectly. However, if the pain persists or worsens, contact your dentist as soon as possible, as root canal treatment may need to be repeated.

After the procedure, the dentist takes X-rays to ensure that all canals have been filled. Follow-up X-rays are recommended at 3, 6, and 12 months, as the risk of reinfection is highest at this time. Early detection allows for prompt intervention and prevents tooth loss. After that, X-rays are recommended every 2–3 years to monitor the tooth's long-term health.

At Kaya Dent Wrocław, we ensure that every stage – from treatment to follow-up – guarantees comfort, safety and long-term oral health.

Questions from you 🙂

1️⃣ How long does the procedure take?

Modern tools, such as a rubber dam, microscope, and machine-assisted root canal preparation, make root canal treatment quick and effective. Each visit lasts as long as a standard dental appointment.

2️⃣ Is the procedure painless?
Local anesthesia guarantees complete painlessness. Brief sensations of instrument movement within the canals are possible, but without significant discomfort.

3️⃣ Is the tooth as strong as before?
After treatment, the tooth is fully functional. Durability depends on the crown restoration (filling or crown). With proper hygiene and care, it can last a lifetime, although it may be slightly more fragile than a living tooth.
